UNP, Pagsanaaan Sur join forces for marine conservation
On October 17, 2024, Pagsanaaan Sur in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur hosted the UNP College of Engineering for a series of extension activities aimed at enhancing community engagement and development.
The event commenced with the renewal of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between UNP and the local community. This agreement formalizes their ongoing partnership for collaborative extension programs designed to benefit both parties. Brgy. Capt. Erwin Atayan signed the MOA on behalf of Pagsanaaan Sur, with Kagawad Henry Umnas as witness.
Dean Nelia Verzosa represented UNP, accompanied by faculty members who also served as witnesses. This renewal highlights the University’s commitment to community development through educational outreach and shared initiatives.
Engr. Marjorie Barcena delivered an informative lecture focusing on waste management. She emphasized its vital role in environmental protection and public health, explaining that improper waste management can attract pests that contaminate food and lead to health problems.
She also provided practical advice on solid waste management techniques such as segregation, recycling, and proper disposal methods. She also discussed key provisions of Republic Act 9003, known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, which establishes a framework for waste reduction and sustainable practices in the Philippines.
Following the lecture, participants engaged in a coastal cleanup drive along the community’s coastline. This initiative aligns with the advocacy for protecting marine life and supports sustainable development goal (SDG) 14, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources. The cleanup effort aimed to reduce marine pollution, which poses significant threats to marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
This series of activities emphasizes UNP’s dedication to fostering strong community ties through education and practical environmental stewardship initiatives.
