Barangay Tamorong in Sta. Catalina, Ilocos Sur, hosted a significant community event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of proper waste management and the art of recycling on November 29, 2024.

Spearheaded by Dr. Imelda Nesperos and Mr. Michael Esta of the University of Northern Philippines’ Department of Languages and Humanities (UNP-DLH) and the University Extension Office, the event brought together community members eager to learn about sustainable practices for managing waste.

The event aimed to educate the community on effective waste management techniques, promote the importance of recycling in preserving the environment, and provide hands-on knowledge that can be applied in daily life to improve waste disposal practices.

Mr. Michael Esta, one of the resource speakers, delivered a comprehensive lecture on the art of recycling. He explained the concept of recycling, its importance in waste reduction, and practical steps that individuals and households can take to segregate and recycle materials.

He also highlighted common recyclable items, such as plastic, paper, and metals, and demonstrated simple methods for separating and reusing waste products in everyday life.

Next, Prof. May Ruadap provided a lecture on waste management, focusing on the broader scope of managing waste beyond recycling. She discussed the principles of reducing waste generation, reusing materials, and the proper disposal of non-recyclable items.

She also emphasized the need for community participation and the role of local government units in supporting waste management programs.

Ms. Dichi Rica Aleson and Dr. Marites Marinas ensured that the program ran smoothly and that all participants were engaged throughout the sessions. Also, Ms. Charito Alconis kept the audience engaged and provided a smooth transition between sessions.

The sessions provided valuable information and practical tips on waste management and recycling, empowering the community to take actionable steps toward creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
