Floro S. Crisologo Lecture Series Sheds Light on Forgetfulness and Aging
share:
The Floro S. Crisologo Lecture Series continued its tradition of enlightening discussions with its latest installment on October 18, 2024. This year’s theme, “Understanding Forgetfulness: Agkabaw Wenno Managlipat,” drew a diverse audience eager to learn about the complexities of memory gaps, and aging.
Dr. Elton O. Ong, Neurology and Neurogenetics distinguished Guest Speaker, captivated the audience with his engaging talk on forgetfulness. Known for his ability to break down complex medical concepts, Dr. Ong explained forgetfulness in the simplest terms possible.
“Forgetfulness is not just about losing information,” Dr. Ong elucidated. “It’s a natural process that occurs as our brains constantly prioritize, and reorganize information. As we age, this process becomes more noticeable, but it’s not always a sign of concern.”
Dr. Ong’s presentation included relatable examples and interactive elements that may help participants better understand the aging process. He emphasized that occasional forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, and should not be equated immediately with cognitive decline or dementia.
The event began with the welcome address of Dr. Rolando Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who set the tone for the day’s discussions. Dr. Navarro emphasized the need for empathy when dealing with people who experience forgetfulness. “As we learn about the science behind forgetfulness, let us also remember the human aspect,” Dr. Navarro urged. “Patience and understanding go a long way in supporting those who struggle with memory issues. Thus, let us learn to empathize with others.”
Throughout the lecture, participants were encouraged to view aging as a natural, and valuable part of life. Dr. Ong’s presentation highlighted the wisdom and experience that come with age, balancing the discussion on cognitive changes.
“Aging is not just about what we lose,” Dr. Ong remarked. “It’ is also about what we gain – perspective, wisdom, and a deeper appreciation for life’s moments.” The lecture was far from a one-sided presentation. Dr. Ong incorporated interactive elements that allowed participants to experience firsthand some of the memory challenges faced by older adults. These activities promoted a deeper understanding, and empathy among attendees.
Atty. Carmelita Crisologo, Former Member of the UNP Board of Regents, and the daughter of UNP Founder, the late Hon. Floro S. Crisologo, delivered a speech that resonated deeply with the UNP community. She expressed sincere gratitude for the institution’s efforts to remember and honor her father, along with other UNP employees who have passed away.
“It warms my heart to see that UNP not only values its current members but also cherishes the memory of those who have contributed to its legacy,” Atty. Crisologo remarked. Her words served as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact that dedicated individuals can have on an institution.
In her Words of Gratitude, Atty. Crisologo urged the UNP family to continue its path of improvement, and mutual support. She emphasized the importance of collective growth, stating, “As we honor those who came before us, let us also commit to building upon their foundations. Each one of us has the power to contribute to UNP’s ongoing success.”
Dr. Pablo R. Quedado, Dean of the College of Medicine, had the honor of closing the event, and his words resonated deeply with the audience. He emphasized the importance of celebrating the aging process, and respecting the changes that occur in our bodies over time.
“We should embrace aging as a natural part of life’s journey,” Dr. Quedado stated. “It’s crucial that we build a community bonded together with understanding and love, where everyone, regardless of age or cognitive ability, feels valued and respected.”
The Floro S. Crisologo Lecture Series once again proved to be a valuable platform for disseminating important information, and promoting a community of understanding. As participants left the event, many expressed a newfound appreciation for the complexities of memory and aging.
The success of this lecture underscores the importance of continued education, and open discussions about aging, and cognitive health. It serves as a reminder that with knowledge comes understanding, and with understanding comes a more compassionate and inclusive society. As the UNP community continues to engage with these important topics, each one plays a crucial role in building a more informed, and empathetic populace, ready to face the challenges and celebrate the joys of aging together.
