UNP, CHR coact for human rights promotion

 

The University of Northern Philippines and the Commission on Human Rights collaborated for an orientation on Human Rights, and discussions on Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children, and Safe Spaces Act in two different locations.

UNP and CHR conducted a lecture in Barangay I, Bantay, Ilocos Sur on June 27, 2024. The lecture on Human Rights was delivered by Dr. Ismael Rivera, UNP Extension Coordinator, while discussions on Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children was rendered by Mr. Johnny Allagadan Jr., Public Information Office staff. On the Safe Spaces Act, Atty. Melanie Williams of CHR, talked about the different forms of gender-based sexual harassment committed in public spaces, educational or training institutions, workplace, as well as online space.

The lecture was participated by barangay officials headed by Barangay Captain Edgar Bamba, Sangguniang Kabataan members, and women residents of Barangay I.

The Lecture in Salcedo, Ilocos Sur on June 28, 2024 was attended by barangay officials of the town headed by its ABC President Hon. John Lumidao, some municipal employees, and tricycle drivers.

Following the lectures was the posting of tarpaulins bearing the tagline “This is a Safe Space” led by Dr. Fatima Rocamora, UNP Vice President for Research and Extension, and Atty. Williams, and witnessed by Prof. May Evelia Ruadap and Prof. Randall Rabacal of UNP, and Ms. Rosario Bernardina Aromin of CHR.

The University of Northern Philippines is the center for Human Right Education in Ilocos Sur.
