share:
In a remarkable display of environmental stewardship, the Information & Communications Technology Office (ICTO) of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) led a significant tree planting initiative on October 17, 2024, in Tamurong, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur. This event, coinciding with UNP’s 59th Founding Anniversary, underscored the institution’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Shareen A. Navarro, ICTO Director, the office’s personnel came together to address pressing global issues such as climate change, and deforestation. This initiative aligns seamlessly with ICTO’s core mission of promoting sustainable development, and safeguarding natural resources, demonstrating that technology-focused departments can play a crucial role in environmental conservation efforts.
The choice of Narra saplings for planting was particularly significant. Narra, also known as Philippine mahogany, is not only the national tree of the Philippines but also a species known for its durability and ecological importance. By focusing on this native species, ICTO emphasized the importance of preserving local biodiversity and enhancing the region’s natural ecosystem.
The tree-planting activity served as a powerful catalyst for community engagement, bringing together ICTO staff members in a collaborative effort that transcended their usual technological focus. As they worked side by side, planting saplings and nurturing the earth, participants experienced firsthand the impact of collective action on environmental conservation. This hands-on approach not only contributed to the immediate goal of reforestation but also fostered a deeper connection between the participants and their natural surroundings.
ICTO’s tree planting initiative in Tamurong, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur, stands as a testament to the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. It exemplifies how academic institutions can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness, bridging the gap between technological advancement and ecological preservation. As these Narra saplings grow, they will serve as a lasting reminder of UNP’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
