UNP partners with PENRO for enhanced greening initiatives

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) has officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) at the UNP Hostel on October 8, 2024.

This collaboration is designed to enhance efforts in natural resources development and environmental management, particularly through the Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP), as mandated by Executive Order No. 193, series of 2015.

Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna, UNP President, emphasized the University’s dedication to greening initiatives. He stated, “We are truly committed to greening the University. We are planning on investing in renewable energy systems, making use of the sun and wind.”

He also mentioned ongoing projects such as implementing water systems and constructing a wastewater treatment plant, which aim to address pressing environmental issues while benefiting students. Dr. Cadorna highlighted the importance of considering ecosystem and forest conservation in strengthening the University’s focus on environmental awareness.

Ms. Rosemarie Jornacion, PENR Officer, shared her vision for fostering environmental awareness. She noted, “We dream to inculcate environmental awareness in academic endeavors,” stressing the need for sustained practices that protect the environment and empower various sectors, particularly the youth, to become effective stewards of nature.

The University aims to enhance the NGP plantation, preferably indigenous plant species, to engage with local communities and provide equal opportunities for participating members.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Erwin Cadorna and Ms. Rosemarie Jornacion were joined by key witnesses including Mr. Antonio Ridulme (CENR Officer), Janette Pascua (TSD Chief), Dr. Rolando B. Navarro (VPAA), and Mr. Albert Tejero (VPFAD). This event marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for both the university and its surrounding communities.
