On October 17, 2024, the members of the UIO, with some residents of Tamurong, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur, came together for a significant community extension activity focused on environmental conservation, and sustainable development. The event, which took place in the heart of the barangay, saw the planting of numerous narra trees, echoing similar initiatives across the province earlier in the year.

The tree planting activity drew participants from various sectors. Engr. Nestor B. Pajaro, City Councilor of Vigan, served as the opening spokesperson for the event. He emphasized the critical role of such initiatives in combating climate change, and preserving the local ecosystem.

“Today’s effort is a testament to our community’s commitment to environmental stewardship,” Engr. Pajaro stated. “By planting these Narra trees, we’re not just greening our barangay; we’re actively contributing to the fight against global warming and soil erosion.”

Prof. Anna Liza V. Europa-Morales, the director of the Environmental Management Office, served as the resource person for the activity. She provided valuable insights into the importance of tree planting and its role in sustainable development.

“Narra trees are not just symbols of our national heritage; they’re vital components of our ecosystem,” Morales explained. “These trees will help sequester carbon, prevent soil erosion, and provide habitats for various wildlife species.”

The event served as an educational platform, with participants receiving insights into proper tree planting techniques, and long-term care for the saplings. The activity emphasized the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation.

As the day concluded, with hundreds of Narra saplings taking root in Tamurong’s soil, the mood was one of accomplishment, and hope. As these Narra trees grow, they will serve as living monuments to the community’s dedication to a greener, more sustainable Ilocos Sur, contributing to the province’s ongoing efforts in reforestation, and environmental conservation.
