UNP leads earthquake preparedness training during 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill in Cabugao

Demonstrating its commitment to community safety, disaster preparedness, and public service, the University of Northern Philippines, through its University Extension Office–Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and the University Emergency Response Team successfully conducted the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill at Nagsincaoan Elementary School in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur on June 18, 2026.

The activity brought together teachers and students of Nagsincaoan Elementary School in a comprehensive disaster preparedness exercise aimed to enhance awareness, readiness, and proper response during earthquake emergencies. Beyond the drill itself, participants were equipped with essential knowledge and practical skills that could help save lives in the event of a real disaster.

Leading the UNP delegation as organizer and trainer was Mr. Jastin Soria, Extension Coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. He was joined by a team of dedicated extension personnel and emergency response advocates composed of Dr. Randall Rabacal, Extension Coordinator for Advocacy and Research, who served as facilitator; Mr. Raffy Celedonio, ROTC Coordinator; Mr. Roderick Ian Dacanay, LTS Coordinator; Mr. Glen Aludino of the College of Teacher Education Laboratory Schools; Mr. Venerand dela Cruz of the College of Health Sciences; Mr. Warmie Tabuso of the College of Technology; and facilitators Mr. Joemar Rabago and Mr. Randy Igarta.

As part of the program, the UNP team conducted an orientation on earthquake safety protocols, emphasizing the correct execution of the internationally recognized “Drop, Cover, and Hold” technique. Participants were also trained on proper evacuation procedures, highlighting the importance of remaining calm, alert, and organized during emergencies.

The hands-on training enabled students and teachers to practice critical response measures in a controlled environment, reinforcing the importance of preparedness and quick decision-making during seismic events. Through simulations and guided demonstrations, participants gained a deeper understanding of how coordinated action can significantly reduce risks and prevent injuries during disasters.

The initiative reflects UNP’s continuing efforts to extend its expertise beyond the university campus and contribute to build resilient communities. By empowering schools with practical disaster risk reduction knowledge and emergency response skills, the University strengthens its role as a proactive partner in promoting safety, preparedness, and community resilience throughout the province.

The successful conduct of the earthquake drill emphasized the value of collaboration between educational institutions and local communities in fostering a culture of disaster preparedness, ensuring that both learners and educators are equipped to respond effectively when emergencies occur.
