UNP Risk Management Team gears up to strengthen comprehensive risk framework

On May 7, 2024, the University of Northern Philippines’ (UNP) Risk Management Team (RMT) convened to bolster their skills and strategies for implementing a robust risk management framework across the institution.

The session was led by Mr. Rino Reyes, the Director for Financial Services, who re-introduced the key components of UNP’s risk management framework. He emphasized the importance of identifying, analyzing, and evaluating all potential risks – whether operational, compliance, reputational, or financial – that the University may face.

“Effective risk management is crucial for UNP to navigate challenges, protect its reputation, and ensure the continuity of our academic and research programs,” Mr. Reyes stated. He outlined the duties and responsibilities of the RMT, which include developing risk mitigation plans, monitoring risk indicators, and reporting to University leadership.

Mr. Joseph Padua, member of the RMT Secretariat and head of the Information Management Office of the University Planning and Information Management Office (UPIMO), then presented detailed process flow charts that mapped out how risk management activities would be integrated across UNP’s various units and functions.

“By establishing clear processes, we can embed risk management into the university’s day-to-day operations,” Padua explained.

Echoing the sentiment, Dr. Eva Marie Avila, director of the Quality Assurance Office, stressed the pivotal role of risk management in safeguarding UNP’s long-term sustainability and success. “In today’s fast-paced environment, proactively identifying and addressing risks is no longer a luxury, but a necessity for any forward-thinking institution like ours,” she said.

The RMT also discussed strategies for enhancing risk awareness and building a risk-intelligent culture among UNP’s faculty, staff, and students. This includes implementing regular training programs, fostering open communication channels, and recognizing exemplary risk management practices.

“Our goal is to empower everyone at UNP to be risk-aware and risk-responsive,” said Mr. Reyes. “By working together, we can strengthen our institution’s resilience and adaptability in the face of emerging challenges.”

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from the RMT to spearhead the development and implementation of UNP’s comprehensive risk management framework. The team will continue to collaborate closely with University leadership and stakeholders to ensure the framework’s success and long-term sustainability.
