UNP strengthens PDL rehabilitation through Livelihood Skills and Nutrition Training

Promoting rehabilitation through skills development, the University of Northern Philippines, through its University Extension Office and the College of Teacher Education, conducted the extension program “Empowering change, one roll at a time: Food processing skills for building better futures through lumpiang gulay and sauce making cum lecture on promoting healthy eating,” for persons deprived of liberty (PDL) at the BJMP Vigan City Jail on June 30, 2026.

Leading the extension initiative was Dr. Jeanina Batin, who guided the implementation of the training and adopted an interactive learning environment for the participants. Prof. Jevie Abella enriched the program through a lecture on healthy eating, highlighting the value of nutritious food choices in improving health and supporting long-term wellness. Assisting throughout the activity were Master of Arts in Teaching Livelihood Education – Home Economics students, who facilitated the food preparation demonstrations and provided hands-on guidance during the skills training.

The event was further strengthened by the presence of BJMP Vigan City Jail Warden JINSP Lloyd Gudoy, who joined the product evaluation and expressed support for rehabilitation programs that empower persons deprived of liberty with practical competencies, encourage self-sufficiency, and contribute to their successful reintegration into society.

Through this initiative, participants gained practical food processing skills and valuable knowledge on healthy nutrition, empowering them with competencies for future livelihood opportunities.
