With student well-being and successful transition to university life at the forefront, the University of Northern Philippines mobilized its student support offices through the Panangpasangbay: General Orientation Program held on August 11 & 13, 2026 at the UNP Gymnasium.
Bringing together new students, shifters, transferees, returning students, and second-coursers, the program served as a vital avenue for familiarizing learners with the University’s support systems, programs, and services.
Reaffirming education as one of the most enduring investments students can carry throughout life, UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna challenged the participants to pursue their aspirations with unwavering determination and purpose. He reminded students that while circumstances and material possessions may change, the knowledge, values, and opportunities gained through education remain a lasting inheritance that no one can take away.
Dr. Cadorna urged the students to remain focused on the goals they have set for themselves, emphasizing that success begins with a clear vision and the courage to pursue it despite challenges. “Education is the only inheritance that we can give you, and it is the only inheritance that cannot be stolen from you. Nothing is impossible under the sun as long as you set that goal,” he declared, inspiring the students to see their education not merely as a requirement, but as a powerful foundation for achieving their dreams and shaping their future.
Reinforcing the call for perseverance and academic commitment, Dr. Rolando Navarro, Vice President for Academic Affairs, reminded students to remain focused on the ultimate purpose of their university journey—completing their studies and turning their aspirations into reality. He urged them to keep their goals firmly in sight amid the challenges and demands of college life, emphasizing that every step they take toward graduation brings them closer to fulfilling the dreams that brought them to the University.
“Your primary purpose why you are here is basically to realize your dream, and that is for you to graduate,” Dr. Navarro said, stressing graduation not simply as the culmination of years of study, but as a significant milestone toward achieving the students’ personal and professional aspirations.
Student representation was highlighted through Hon. Rachel Anne Imperial, Student Council President, who introduced the role of the Student Council in representing the interests and concerns of the student body and serving as a link between students and the University.
An overview of the University was presented by Dr. Angelica Arquines, OIC Director of the University Information Office, covering UNP’s history, vision, mission, organizational structure, and key officials to help students better understand the institution they are now part of.
On academic matters, Mr. Robinson Tolio, University Registrar, discussed the University’s general academic policies and procedures, giving students guidance on the requirements and processes they will encounter throughout their studies.
Related to students’ academic needs, Dr. Shareen Navarro, Director of the Information and Communications Technology Office, presented the digital and technology services available to students and how these can support their academic activities at the University.
Student welfare and support were also emphasized during the program. Dr. Mariano Paterno Avila, Director of the Office of Student Affairs and Services, delivered the welcoming remarks and highlighted the role of OSAS in addressing student needs and providing assistance beyond the classroom.
The responsibilities that come with being part of the University community were discussed by Mr. Arnold Pio, Assistant Head of Student Discipline, Human Rights and Drug Education Services, through topics on student discipline, human rights, and drug education.
For library services, Ms. Marieglo Presto, Head of the Library Services Office, introduced the resources and services available to support students in their studies and research.
Student safety and preparedness were discussed by Prof. Jastin Soria, Coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction Management, who introduced the University’s measures and services aimed at helping students respond to emergencies and other possible risks on campus.
Other student concerns were also covered during the orientation, including data privacy, medical and dental services, security, and hospital services, giving students a better understanding of where they can seek assistance when needed.
Through the orientation, participants gained a clearer understanding of the resources and assistance available to them, empowering them to navigate academic and campus life with greater confidence throughout their university journey.
