DLH facilitates literacy skills activity

The Department of Languages and Humanities of the College of Arts and Sciences through its DLH SSS (Saluad, Saririt ken Saranay) Extension Program smoothly administered a Kuwentong Sulat: Fostering Creativity and Literacy Skills in Capangdanan Elementary School, Capangdanan, Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

Literacy skills training was provided to the pupils of Capangdanan Elementary School, which plays a vital role in enhancing pupils’ ability to express themselves, think critically, and contribute to society in meaningful ways. These skills are fundamental in fields such as education, arts, communication, and expressions of culture.

The welcome of Mrs. Diane May R. Giron, the principal emphasized the development of literacy skills begins early in life and continues throughout a person’s educational and professional career.

In an academic context, literacy skills enable students to excel in reading comprehension, essay writing, and critical analysis. In addition, the appreciation of literature and written expression fosters empathy, understanding, and cultural awareness. Through reading literature, individuals can explore different perspectives and gain insight into the human condition, which ultimately enriches their intellectual and emotional capacity.

Prof. Bernadeth F. Canoy, the organizer and initiator of the activity, conveyed the rationale for the activity. She stressed that literacy skills and creativity skills are two essential aspects of intellectual and personal development that complement one another. By fostering both abilities, individuals can enhance their ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and engage in imaginative problem-solving. Programs and activities that promote these skills—such as creative writing workshops, reading clubs, and performance arts—offer valuable opportunities for growth and self-expression.

The professors of the department facilitated the literacy skills activity: Evelyn Amano, Ma. Ines B. Pastor, Jocelyn Fagela, Jenny Lou Espinoza, and Emely Rapacon for reading skills; Al C. Benzon, Francisco Quelnan, Judy Ann Tadal, Kem Eli Pacpaco, and Ruthie Charmaine Tubon for writing skills; and Crystal Barroga and Sherwin Forneas (drawing skills).

The lecture concluded with closing remarks given by Prof. Nolito R. Ragunjan, the unit extension coordinator. He acclaimed the collaboration among the three institutions and articulated the importance of continued partnerships in empowering community engagement through the literacy skills of the recipient’s children.

The activity was initiated and organized by Prof. Bernadeth F. Canoy and led by Prof. Allen Magdaleno De Vera, the department head.
