DSSP holds two programs for community outreach

As part of the celebration of the 59th founding anniversary of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), on October 17, 2024 the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy (DSSP) conducted extension activities aimed at fostering social responsibility and community engagement.

One group visited the Ilocos Sur Community College (ISCC) in Bantay, where they held the event titled “I am Responsible: Cultivating a Conscious Social Ethic (Pulot na Basura, May Pulot na Pag-asa).” Targeting senior high school students, the program focused on environmental awareness and civic responsibility.

Dr. Arnel Doctolero, administrator of ISCC, praised the initiative during his address, urging students to embrace their roles as responsible citizens. “Your actions today shape the future of our country,” he emphasized, inspiring attendees to adopt a proactive approach to social issues.

Meanwhile, another group traveled to Barangay Dadaliquiten Norte in Sinait for an event called “Seas the Day: Volunteerism, Coastal Cleanup, and Voter Engagement.” The program, led by Atty. Ignatius Tablada and Atty. Christian Casildo, began with informative talks directed at barangay officials, emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship and civic participation.

Following the discussions, participants engaged in a coastal cleanup, demonstrating their commitment to protecting local ecosystems.

These activities not only highlighted the DSSP’s commitment to community service but also strengthened the bonds between the University and local communities. Through hands-on involvement and educational outreach, the department aims to cultivate a sense of social ethics among the youth, preparing them to take on active roles in society.
